Former Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, has, as
fully expected, recorded a landslide victory in yesterday's
Haltemprice and Howden by-election.
He resigned last month in protest at the erosion of
civil liberties, particularly regarding the Government's
victory on the 42-day detention for terrorist suspects.
Mr Davis claimed a "stunning victory" as most of the
33.8% of the electorate who voted sided with him (17,113
votes).
He said the result was a 'shot across the bows of Gordon
Brown's authoritarian government.'
With the Lib Dems not standing due to supporting Mr
Davis' stance and Labour being too cowardly to even
enter a candidate and at least use the by-election to
contribute to the important debate about basic freedoms,
the Greens managed to finish second with 1,758 votes.
The English Democrats came a close third with 1,714
votes followed by a record twenty-three also-rans, including
former goalie, sports commentator and now conspiracy
theorist David Icke (110 votes) and George Hargreaves
for the Christian Party with 76 votes - 32 more than
the Church of the Militant Elvis Party candidate, but
less than a fifth of the votes polled by 'Mad Cow-Girl'
for The Official Monster Raving Loony Party.
I guess there's nothing more to say.
