"Labour
crackdown on cannabis" is the headline on the
Labour Party's website.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has just announced that
cannabis will be reclassified as a Class B drug, "sending
a strong message that the drug is harmful and should
not be taken."
Whatever your views on cannabis and its legalisation,
it is almost comical that four years after downgrading
the drug from Class B to C, Labour does a U-turn and
proudly announces that they are cracking down on it.
I know we have been getting dumbed down for decades
by the media, state 'education' and fluoridation of
the water supply, but you still have to admire the contempt
the Government has for our intelligence.
The Home Secretary continued, "Cannabis use has
fallen significantly across all age ranges and this
is a testament to the success of the previous ten years
of Labour’s Drug Strategy. However, the reduction in
cannabis use must not be allowed to reverse."
Hold on: "official figures showed the decision
to downgrade the drug had been followed by a significant
fall in its use."
The Government ignored the advice of the Advisory Panel
on the Misuse of Drugs who said that reclassifying cannabis
would be unlikely to deter users of the drug.
The Panel agreed that there was evidence that cannabis
use can lead to mental illness, but that there were
better ways of handling the situation.
Clearly, drugs should only be used for treating medical
conditions and not for getting stoned - why stay at
home feeling high for a short time and paying for it
with periods of depression and paranoia?
Having been a very heavy drinker for years, I can say
that there are far greater things in life than the false
pleasure of being stoned. It just never provided any
real joy.
I think the best way to deal with drug misuse would
have to comprise a number of strategies including busting
the myth that drugs are cool and empowering youngsters
to have stronger, individual minds so that they do not
want to waste their valuable time on drugs.
Unfortunately, today's education is about instilling
a herd mentality into children and filling their minds
with political correctness to the extent that they leave
school needing deprogrammed.
